According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the cross is "the principal symbol of the Christian religion." Many Christian churches hold that the cross was the instrument used to bring about the death of Jesus, and therefore venerate it. Other scholars hold that the instrument of the Messiah's death was, instead, an upright stake.
The symbol of the cross itself was borrowed from pre-Christian inscriptions. Britannica reports that the Egyptian Ankh - a cross with a looped top - was a symbol of life in the religion of ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphics depict the ankh being held by pharaohs or gods. The ankh was later "adopted and extensively used on Coptic Christian monuments."
The cross in this drawing guide looks like stained glass or a mosaic. Stained glass crosses have been common decorative elements in churches for a thousand years. Examples of stained glass depicting religious scenes can be observed at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The stained glass artwork has been collected from churches, chapels, and cathedrals across Europe.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Cross
1. Begin by drawing a narrow vertical rectangle. This will form the base or central upright stake of the cross.
2. Draw another, slightly smaller, rectangle within the first.
3. Draw a narrow horizontal rectangle perpendicular to the first. Notice that this rectangle is shorter than the first, and that it is placed above the halfway point on the upright pale.
4. Draw another, slightly smaller, rectangle within the horizontal rectangle.
5. Erase the guidelines from the outer edges of the cross, giving it a solid outline.
6. Between the cross and its outline, draw short straight lines that are slanted in various directions. This outlines the edges of the stained glass sections. Within the horizontal arms of the cross, draw straight lines that slant on opposite parallels. This too outlines sections of the glass.
7. Draw straight lines within the upper and lower portions of the upright pale. Enclose irregular shapes, outlining the cut glass.
8. Draw a large rectangle surrounding the entire cross. Then, begin filling the rectangle with small rectangles and squares of various sizes.
9. Completely fill in the large rectangle with smaller rectangles and squares to finish the stained glass window.
Color each of the small shapes with different colors in order to mimic the appearance of stained glass.
Tip: draw this picture on a plastic sheet, waxed paper, or some other transparent or translucent material. Color with markers and then hang on a window. Sunlight will filter through the translucent material as it would a real stained glass window!
